Jobs and opportunities in Christchurch
A practical starting point for finding vacancies, understanding the local labour market and focusing your search on roles that fit your skills.
Use live vacancy sources for live jobs
Christchurch Is Hiring does not accept applications and does not claim to maintain a complete live vacancy database. For current roles, use employers’ own careers pages and established New Zealand job platforms, then verify the position with the organisation advertising it.
Search by skill as well as job title
Job titles vary between employers. A controls engineer may also find relevant roles under automation, systems integration, instrumentation, project engineering or industrial software. A communications specialist may find work under marketing, content, stakeholder engagement or digital roles. Build a small list of synonyms before you search.
High-employment areas
Christchurch City Council’s February 2025 snapshot lists health care and social assistance, retail, manufacturing, professional/scientific/technical services and construction among the city’s largest sectors by employment. These are broad sectors, not a forecast of current vacancies, but they are a useful map of where substantial workforces already exist.
Engineering & construction
Infrastructure, building, technical design and project roles.
Health & healthtech
Clinical, community, operations, research and technology roles.
Manufacturing
Production, maintenance, quality, engineering and automation.
Technology
Software, data, product, electronics and digital systems.
Build a target-employer list
Rather than applying only when an advert appears, identify 20–40 organisations that employ your skills. Review their products, customers, location and technical stack or operating environment. Follow their careers pages and LinkedIn activity. This creates context that improves both applications and interviews.
Make applications easy to evaluate
Employers should not have to infer why your experience matters. State the problem, your responsibility, the tools or methods used and the result. Quantify scale where it is meaningful, but do not invent numbers simply to make a bullet point look stronger.
